Back to the Fuchsia!
What just happened at St. Petersburg!?
Round 1 of Indy, Season 33, and two time Indy Jr Championship runner-up Mack Zaggro took to the full Indy circuit for the first time in his now synonymous fuchsia pink livery. But what happened next is nothing short of miraculous.
As the #23 car rounded the final bend, no-one would have expected the British rookie to ping to the top of the time sheet, but after the first run of Qualifying, that's exactly what happened.
Zaggro was leading a British one-two ahead of Josh Rush going into the second runs, surprised and unsure if he would be able to hold on to his marginal 0.023 second gap. But as one after the next tried, none could top the 29 year old who sealed a highly unprecedented pole position on his Indy debut!
Furthermore, Mack accomplished the feat while matching the outright lap record, to the nearest 0.000 of a second!
Zaggro has proven himself to be a bit of a short circuit specialist, and with a lap of just over 60 seconds it's played right into his wheelhouse. The race however is often a different matter, and the rookie has yet to turn a wheel in race conditions, or pen a single strategy, and with just 0.068 covering the entire Top 10, odds are open on where Mack will actually finish. But heading up an all-British front row with a qualifying lap record is a solid start for the rookie!
