Relâmpago: Rookie of the Year at Nasc Gold Cup
Brazilian driver Roger Relâmpago, 27yo, had a long time dream: to race in the legendary tracks of Nasc and participate in the Gold Cup Championship.
After a career in Touring series, he accepted the invitation from Dinoco-Rusteeze team to take the whell of the #71 Toyota Camry at this Season 25.
All was new. New series, new strategies, new chassis, new pitcrew management. But there was no turning back now.
Today we'll see the last race of the season at Homestead oval, Miami FL.
And, boy, what a season!
In short, Relâmpago segured with one race to go the runner-up spot, second only to now double-time champion Antonio Monteiro.
Also, Relâmpago made some milestones by setting the first-ever poles, fast laps, wins and track records with the obscure Toyota Camry chassi.
Against all odds, he took the Camry to a first-time win at none less than Talladega Superspeedway. Later at Phoenix, race 35, a solid 2nd win secured the 2nd position of the championship.
Relâmpago set 5 pole positions and 3 fast laps, plus two qualify track records this season.
The quality of the adversaries just values this conquest. Besides Monteiro, Relâmpago had to fight off Briand, Barker, Bruce Wayne, Dan Daniel and a few other rising star drivers like himself.
At this point, Relâmpago is also the only driver on the grid not having a single DNF in the season.
