NASC Canada: Rookie Shows His Hand

Providing that hand is like, a 3 and a 5, off suit...

It was always gonna be a "let's see" kind of debut for British 18 year old Wynn Hunter, who will contest NASC Canadian series this season.

Scraping into the field ranked flat bottom, 30/30 and with barely enough money to pay the license fee, the youngster set about seeing where he'd filter in to the field in the first round of the season at Mosport.

Waiting almost the entire session for his one-shot qualifier, Hunter took to the track in the final minutes, with the majority of the field established, but in scenes reminiscent of former driver Mack Zaggro and his shock pole position on his Indy debut, Wynn would surprise in the first turn of his brand new Toyota's wheel, going ahead of the field in sector 1, and leading by a tenth! However, perhaps surprised by the reading of his delta, Hunter showed his lack of composure and experience, letting the car get away from him in a big way, and set himself up for a tough race tomorrow with a perfectly clear track behind him, eventually setting the slowest time of the day.

Alas, the youngster took solace from the fact that, for one sector at least, he was on pace to upset the order, dominated at the front by senior drivers, including series reigning champion Brad Brady and 3rd place returnee Max Velox.

The #47 Nova Sport entry will spend Round 1 on damage limitation, but for all intents, may well have shown an unexpected flash of speed to worry the front runners...
