The Underdog Takes It
Ema Nishino, the 27 years old Japanese stock car driver won NASCAR Gold Cup for Season 37. Back in earlier this season, the Japanese achieved her maiden season series race win at Las Vegas. She added 11more before claiming the championship trophy.
Interviewer: Hi, Ema. You had been called “The Underdog” through your career.. but now you won a prestigious championship.
Ema: What? I had been called what?
I: ...You can forget that. Did you know that your races have been so miserable that people rumor the latest remake of Les Miserables to be a story about you...?
E: .... No. What again??
I: Okay... err I mean, you scored 12 wins this season without achieving a single fastest lap in the races. At the end of the day, what do you think helped you with the results?
E: You’re right. I guess I’ve never been the fastest driver on the field; even in the races I won with a big margin. I learnt it crucial to take action only at the right time. Missing one always costed me of one whole race. I make mistakes, am not good at all the tracks on the calendar, and my skills are inferior to my rivals. We changed and installed a lot new prior to this season. Luckily, some worked out well to make up for my faults.
I: So what change did you make for this season?
E: My manager finally takes race strategies seriously. He used to collect data from successful drivers from the past seasons to build race strategies. Now he does it specially for me, taking account of my styles and all.
I am so proud of getting the #3 car onto this podium. Dale Earnhardt has been my hero since childhood.
I: It’s a kind of funny to see a Itasha here to be honest. Now let’s have your thoughts about the upcoming season. You’re going to stay in Gold Cup, right? What do you think of the latest entry list?
E: Itasha is what I had to do as a Japanese!! You know, Miku is a racing diva and icon in my country.
Yes, I am staying. We’re aiming at getting wins at wherever we didn’t perform well during the past seasons. For the drivers, I see a lot of experienced drivers. I should not expect another successful season. I am still looking forward to learning from them after experiencing those world class championships. I also expect rivals of my age like Carlotti and Ritter to get much tougher opponents. I hope we entertain everyone more than ever in the upcoming season with battles of former and future champions!
I: Thank you, Ema. I wish your good luck, and hopefully you forget what I accidentally told you...
