Comunicados de Imprensa - Sincar makes it stick in Uruguay!
Sincar makes it stick in Uruguay!
In what must be described as a major shock, young Irish driver Ray Sincar took his maiden win in his rookie Formula E season at Punta del Este, Uruguay today.
Sincar brought his Tesla-sponsored, Spark-Renault SRT01E across the finish line in first place to crazed scenes both in the stands and in his hometown of Dublin, Ireland.
Lap 1 seen Sincar make his intentions known early on by passing the experienced British driver, Terry Fullerton to take him into 4th position. By the end of lap 3 Sincar had chased down the deficit to the podium sitting Slovenian, Blaž Vidmar, to just 0.009 of a second. Sincar eased into 3rd place at the beginning of the next lap.
Sincar tried to put some distance between himself and the 4th placed runner, but after an error by the Irishman on the 10th lap, Vidmar, vastly experienced in comparison, re-took 3rd spot. Sincar kept pace with the front runners as best he could when on lap 14 the race leader, Bohumil Steiger Jr., sensationally had to quit the race with engine trouble. Sincar had again moved up to 3rd spot.
4 laps later and Vidmar was overtaken once more by the speedy Sincar who now found himself miraculously sitting in 2nd place, a distant 7.5 seconds behind Race and Series leader, John Barber. A 2nd place finish at this stage of Sincar's career, up against vastly superior drivers, would be a huge step forward!
Up to lap 28 Sincar kept a gap of around 8/10's to Vidmar who was pushing the Irishman as much as he could, then BANG!!!
John Barber, who was running away for the race win, crashed fairly innocuously just before turn 3 and let Sincar move into first place. Sincar was told over the radio what had occurred up front and was incredulous to the news. All Sincar had to do was keep it on the grey stuff for his first ever Season Series win.
In truth, he was never in trouble over the last few laps and surged his machine over the line and passed his mechanics for what must be one of the greatest days in the Irishman's life so far. There'll be plenty of celebrating tonight as opportunities like this don't come around very often.
