The good, the bad, the ugly for local driver in Denver
After an amazing qualifying run which gave local driver Louis "The Lip" Gagliano the pole position the outlook appeared rosy that the Colorado local would sweep the weekend.
"The Lip" who grew up 30 miles northeast in Boulder and attended Boulder High School looked excited as he climbed into the car for the qualifier taking the pole and starting the local papers started talking up the "local boy making good angle"
In the sprint race again "The Lip" continued his dominance over the field. For 33 laps (out of 43) nobody could touch him, then something unexpected happened causing him to crash and ending his day where he finished in 23rd place. To say he was heartbroken over the result was an understatement. He didn't move from the car for close to 10 minutes before he finally came out.
The long race things just got worse, Starting 27th he quickly moved up the rankings getting as high as 11th before a driver error caused him to crash and finish again in 27th. When he was finally able to calm down long enough to talk rationally with the press his remarks were so heavily laden with curing and swearing they could not be printed or repeated. It was obvious that the local boy who wanted to make good in Denver had failed in his goals. While there will be other opprotunities it make take a while before the stings of this defeat will go away.
