Cobos goes 'down under' in season 50
After three 'OK' but not extraordinary seasons in Porsche Supercup and just before becoming 27, Extremadurian driver Álvaro Cobos has decided to change his plans and jump to the Australian Supercars series from season 50 onwards.
Right after achieving his first and only victory of the season at Interlomas, in the season closer of the 911 Supercup series, Álvaro took the media a little bit surprised after announcing his decision. 'This victory isn't worth it if things aren't going well in the rest of the championship. Apart from this, these series are pretty boring, while on Supercars there are pitstops and many more races, so after consulting this with some drivers friends of mine who have done well after going there, I think this is going to be an exciting yet exhausting challenge for me'.
Cobos was right on most of the things he said since one of Supercars' peculiarities is the variety in terms of race types, since there can be from very short 'super sprints' to pure endurance races, like Bathurst 1000 or Sandown 500. There is no time to take a rest, since each of the 35 races are all right after another, apart from the fact that the three different points systems depending on race lengths can give the driver a bigger margin for mistakes than in other season series. It will be interesting to see if Álvaro tries to stay consistent, as it is characteristic of himself, or if he will try to take risks focusing on longer races.
His biggest rivals will be Raphael Drummond, under Porsche Racing's radar, and Oiva Hamays, who is a year older than Álvaro, has great potential and also precedents linked to Pegaso, as manager Temmes' previous driver was Marc Vilanova's teammate in season 33, in the then-called Ferrari team.
We wish him the best of luck and hopefully, in 77 days' time, we can show off his success in the land of the kangaroos.
