Keolman and Headington incite some Rage - F3 Oceania Race report.
It was a lovely sunny day for the second race at Hamilton this morning. And all was going well until lap 12. Headington started from the front followed by Rages Knight and Keolman, positions they kept for 11 laps. Keolman made a half assed attempt up the inside of Knight who defended his line, there was contact and Knight ended up out the race from 2nd place. The stewards have said Knight was too aggressive, but that's open to debate. The safety car was called while Knights rear wing was retrieved from the track and meanwhile everyone moved up a spot.
After the car went back in there were only the two laps till the safety car was as back out after Wilkinson spun for no apparent reason.
Harvey dived directly in to the pits, trying to gain an advantage and get out of 5th. Bennett unusually waited until the very last lap of the safety car to make his stop. This left the pair 27th and 28th. However 2 laps later the entire field pitted, Bennett passed Harvey, and the pair were now running first and second when the safety car came out for the third time after Hromkovic crashed.
Shortly after the safety car came back in Leholk the series leader pulled to the side of the track for his second DNF in two races.
Bennett was leading Harvey and Headington, who quickly passed the Australian for second place. And that's how they stayed for the next 13 laps when Headington, seeing his time running out made a desperate lunge for the lead. He hadn't thought it through and hit Bennett hard causing damage to the car. Bennett dropped back to 3rd and pulled into the pits to get the car sorted.
Headington came out unscathed and crisis d to the victory, taking the series lead in the process.
Bennett ended 11th and out of the points, I'm sure he is less than pleased with the driving of his fellow Brit. Ebdon came home second and Harvey took the last step on the podium. Rage takes heart from Harvey's position but I think Knight and Bennett might be a bit less forgiving in the future.
