Jones takes Australian Crown with win at Homebush
Alan Jones has become the first champion of the F3 Australian Series, leading by 109 points with only 100 left after his win at Homebush in the Feature Race.
This makes him the 4th Series champion in the world, after Romain Grosjean, Lea Poucette and Robert Kubica in the Czechoslovakian Series, the Central European Series and the South American Series respectively.
Jones win at Homebush was a tricky one, 5 safety cars livened up the racing on the already tricky circuit. 4 Safety car interventions came in a row, only 3 laps of green flag racing were seen. Jones capitalized on the first, moving from 3rd to 1st before the safety car was out again. Afterwards, a easy ride home was enough to see Jones crowned the victor and Champion of Season #1!
Manager FlyingFinn, after the celebrations:
Q- How was the feeling in the team after today?
FF- Fantastic. Obviously we weren't looking for the championship to be finished right here and now, and for Mick Sheahan to retire for it to happen, it's not the best way to win.
Q- On Sheahan, he was leading into turns 6/7, before crashing out, was that the reason Alan passed Lynette Watkins for the lead?
FF- Well, it's possible that there may have been some hesitation, but Alan was right there and the opportunity presented itself. As any driver would, he took the gap when it was there.
Q- So, plans for next year?
FF- Not locked in just yet.
Q- Rumour is that you're moving to the new F2 for next season?
FF- Possible, we'll for sure be looking at getting hold of a F2 car, but we'll see.
Q- Lastly, what are the plans for the rest of this season?
FF- Well, we'll just continue. Our sponsors are very happy with the car winning (laughs). We'll get Alan to drive out front and let the battle for second in the championship continue without us intervening hopefully.
Next round of the Australian Series is at the Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst.
