Bittersweet first test for Jones
Alan Jones took his first steps towards a maiden F2 title today with his first test of the new Dallara F2 chassis. While the former Australian F3 champion took to it like a duck to water, he also found it can bite hard, crashing twice during his Oceania F2 Series practice at Albert Park.
Jones: "Wow, what a car! I am really happy with the path the team have chosen. We had the opportunity to be here last season, but decided against it and now we have the chance for a good season in F2."
Q- Would you have preferred to be in one of the Indy series'?
AJ: "Personally, I know I could do well, but the competition is fierce and we don't want to be in a unnecessary dogfight for nothing."
Q- You had a few mistakes with the F2 car today, any problems?
AJ: "No, let's just say that a year in which you have a limited schedule doesn't help your driving skills! But the car is new, it goes faster, gets there quicker, stops sooner and turns harder. I just want to keep these to my only crashes!"
Manager FlyingFinn: "We're all delighted with the session today. We recently employed more personnel, and the feeling around was top notch. The season promises good results, we just need to take them."
Q- How did you feel about Jones crashing?
FF: "We weren't worried. Yes we lost laps, but Alan still drove to within a second of the race fastest lap for F2. On his first drive, with two crashes, it could be worse."
Q- Care to comment on the rumours of your finances?
FF: "Just for you I will (laughs). There's no doubt we could have a bit more from sponsors, but this is why we are here, to get results and everything that comes with them."
Alan Jones will be at Albert Park on Feb 20th for the first round of the Oceania F2 Series. He is currently racing his F3 car around the globe.
