Only The Brave... Or The Stupid.
The WAR F3 crew behind Ray Striver were celebrating a phenomenal victory tonight, snatched from a race that looked lost on lap 1.
Manager Adamski made the unorthodox call to run wet tyres for Race 1 of the Marathon Custom Series despite the damp conditions being suitable for slicks.
"We studied the radar closely, it looked as though the rain in the latter part of the race was going to be much worse..." said Adamski.
"We knew we'd struggle early on and take our chances in the pack, we just had to hope the race would come to us..."
Striver lined up 3rd on the grid just two places up on team-mate Biguel Maines, but lap one saw the inevitably slow, wet-tyred car drop to 10th and take significant damage in an altercation whilst trying to keep the pace. An accident that prompted the race's first Safety Car. The heavy rain held off further still and the struggling Ray was all-but written off down in 21st position with just 8 laps remaining.
Then came the rain and within a few laps, the young Brit had clawed back to 10th in a charge that was surely too late. With 4 laps to go the track was registering +30% wet and slick donned cars were dropping fast as Striver jumped from 8th to 4th.
This monumental resurgence was capped off as - on lap 16/18 - Ray took the lead and disappeared into the rain which had now topped +40%, eventually winning by almost fifteen seconds! Coupled with an impressive showing by WAR driver Maines who held on to the road on slick tyres to come home 4th.
A good day in the Windsor camp! Including a shout out to Thomas Troy who won in Brasilia earlier in the day!
