Crash Test Dummies accept McLaren’s offer and changes name to “McLaren Racing”

One of the new MRC-F1 teams started their season with a bang. Shortly after starting the work on their facilities and the new car they came up with a new sponsor. Crash Test Dummies is now McLaren Racing.

From now on the team works under the name “McLaren Racing”, one of the biggest names in Formula 1. McLaren got to Formula 1 in 1966 and were able to win 12 Driver Championships and 8 Constructor Championships. The MRC-drivers in the following seasons will be under a certain kind of pressure as they follow drivers like Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna or Mika Hakkinen on their quest for the Championship.

We talked to one of their owners, Peter Koenig:

Grand Prix Express: Mister Koenig, everybody liked the idea of the underdog team from Jamaica. After being taken over by one of the biggest motorsport companies this idea is gone, isn’t it?

Koenig: I don’t necessarily think so. We still have a rather small budget compared to our competitors and we are still operating from Jamaica, so it’s more or less just a name change. To show this we are even sticking to our helmet design with the Jamaican flag. Besides this we now have the benefit of racing with the name of one of the biggest motorsport brands of all times. I think this will be a huge lift for the whole team.

Grand Prix Express: McLaren is a big name in racing. Do you have what it takes to be competitive enough to live up to that name?

Koenig: Nobody knows yet. Of course we try to be competitive but it’s a new challenge for everyone and we will see next season if we made the right decisions.
