Has the Motorsport World starting to go all NASCAR?
Alrighty then. Time for my first post outside the world of MRC. And this is a new feature that will come into force in the new F1 2014 season. The option for Drivers to select their OWN number, rather than have a number based on driver and constructor positions of last season.
Now this option is certainly going to be interesting on how it pans out in the long-term, since NASCAR have made this feature work, ever since the series first started. The idea being it will help boost a Driver's brand and popularity. Sounds like a good idea. But is it something that needs diversifying into other race seires' around the globe?
There is certainly those sort of people that will take the mickey if someone opts for a number that is based on bad luck or cockiness, but some drivers and riders I have seen selecting their numbers are not really basing their choice on branding or preferring to a number at all. It's more of a case of, luck of the draw or something.
Those racing series' that use 2 wheels are already seeing the difference. Most notably the Moto GP, for example Rossi's iconic 46, and even the FIM Speedway GP series is having the same makeover for 2014.
Whatever the opinion's, it will be interesting to see on how numbers in Motorsport will play a part, possibly inadvertently, through advertising and popularity.
