Being a team manager is very hard for all teams!
2 years ago I took over Mercedes now Chevy. I took Chevy vs LKR for the challenge and old friend had been asking me to run the team for years.
I came into the team in Crisis mode. We had new 4 part engine on the horizon but staff was no where near ready. While my posts was so optimistic it appeared to others i thought it would be easy. But behind the scenes I could only hope for some advanatge early on that it would be very hard for other teams to make this new engine.
Meanwhile I had to completely hire an entirely new staff. Little did i know at the time how much other teams spent to get even better chassis at 1/2 our cost.
Then i did not know how much image meant to sponsor offers. I once again over react and spent to much on image. It did get our red ink down but in long run made it worse.
I discovered my young staff skills was reaching a point where making our engine was a great option in this coming cycle. So once again I had to make drastic changes for the new conditions.
We went from reaching mId pact in some races to right back down near the bottom. This of course made me look like worst manager in all of F1.
But the truth is we have the money and the staff to make an engine this cycle. Even though I am the worst manager in F1 The team can now be run successfully with good expectations of facing all the challenges every Team manager faces.
So whether a team is top or bottom the 4 part engine is upon us next season development cycle. Possibility even a gearbox to boot. we all have different approches to this same challenge. Not one team manager would ever say it is easy or simple. In this we all support each other, None of us want another rival to completely fail.
This is the most important thing I have learned these past two years. F1 only works if All 15 teams are trying to build a better var then last seasons! That is the Future of the Game a place where anyone can reach one of the 15 teams in F1!
