The challenges are really just a basic tutorial. They aren't meant to be a resource-producing feature. The fact that they give rewards is merely an incentive to actually go through the tutorials.
For ways to actually earn coins without paying, take a look at the Prediction Competition. You can win coins for making good predictions on the top season series. You can also win coins for writing the best press releases. Those are two ways to win coins for free.
You can also get gifted coins from other managers. I don't advise begging for them, but if someone is feeling particularly generous they might hand you some (and I might have just done that ;) )
In the long run, $22ish per year (depending on the currency conversion) is well worth it for the superlicense. They have to pay the hosting expenses somehow.
Finally, note that this game is not a pay-to-win game. There is nothing you can access with coins and the superlicense that will give you an inherent advantage over others or make your path to success faster. All you will get are side features to play around with (e.g. private cars, which really do next to nothing in this game relevant to your driver's career) and more convenience (like archiving setups instead of having to track them in a spreadsheet (although as you get more experience you may find yourself using a spreadsheet in addition to the setup archive like I do). The manager of the current #4 driver in the world does not have a superlicense. So you can be successful as a free-to-play player in the same amount of time as a paying player.
Challeges
With only four challeges how could players with no money to use for the game or time to get coins and other items. I think that they should add some more challeges. I play other games and they have specail seasonal things. I would like to have season...
