F2NA: Title Run-In
As series' across the globe enter their final two weeks of competition, we take a look at a remarkable season to date in F2 North America. And you'll be hard pushed to find a closer points table.
Title defender Romain Grosjean Jr continues his run of form, leading the way on 293 points and scooping up over half of the seasons wins with 10 so far. Though an odd off race at Watkins Glen saw him relinquish points to his only remaining title rival; Johnny Da Costa Jr who sits 62 points adrift in 2nd on 231.
Then the challenge really heats up. The fight for 3rd is lead by series veteran Monty Semprini who had a mighty start claiming two early wins. The table is as follows:
3rd. Semprini - 170
4th. Novikov - 148
5th. Striver - 148
6th. Reid - 146
Any of these four drivers can claim the final piece of silverware but at this point it is Semprini's to lose. The big climber is in-form Ray Striver who had slumped as low as 8th around mid-season after a number of tangles while battling with both Reid and Novikov, but all have wound up in this showdown with a valuable 100 points available, a four race run that includes two rounds at Austin where Semprini has enjoyed success before.
Not just for glory in F2, several of these drivers are in with a chance at claiming a spot in this seasons Trophy of Champions, an accolade that will likely fall to whoever takes 3rd.
Arguably just as interesting is where some of the sports biggest young drivers will wind up next season. Grosjean, Da Costa, Striver and Novikov are all under 23, and with Formula E on the horizon, along with the inherent migration away from F2 World and Indy towards FE and F1. Season 12 could prove highly successful for some of the sports youngest stars.
