Vellacott off to a flying start in rookie series debut
Young Aussie racer Daniel Vellacott made an impressive debut in the F3 rookie series at Norisring in Nuremberg,Germany. Vellacott qualified 4th for the opening 56 lap race, he quickly made his way into 2nd by lap 5 but was slowly losing ground to the leader K.Kahne. A safety car on lap 10 bunched the field up which gave Vellacott a chance at taking the lead, But at the restart on lap 15 Vellacott made a slight error and dropped 2 spots to 4th, But he quickly got back into 3rd on the next lap. Another safety car period on lap 18 bunched the field up again and at the restart on lap 23 Vellacott got back into 2nd place and slowly started closing in on leader Kahne. On lap 31 Vellacott made a pass on Kahne for the lead and successfully got through. But Kahne wasn't going down without a fight and retook the lead on lap 34. Vellacott took the lead back on the next lap and pulled out a 1 sec gap over Kahne, which was quickly voided by another safety car on lap 41 which would set up a 9 lap battle to the end at the restart on lap 48. Vellacott and Kahne swapped positions numerous times in the last 9 laps with Kahne coming out on top at the finish with Vellacott 1 sec behind in second. In the second 105 lap race Vellacott took the win after taking the lead from Kahne who crashed on lap 24 after making a driver error. Vellacott held the lead for the remainder of the race and never looked like being bothered winning by a 6 sec marging. Vellacott said in a statement after the event that " I couldn't have made a better debut a 1st and a 2nd". His next outing in the F3 rookie series is at Most in the Czech Republic
