Interview: Partying with Wais Vé Kuba
Tony Dickson is here for the 18th race here at Long Beach, the 2nd of the weekend as you guys know and it's the Feature Race. We are here with the race winner Wais Vé Kuba, starting from 6th after the sprint race wasn't the one he hoped for, finishing with a damaged car. Kuba had to benefit from Vini Barker's accident which put him out on Lap 3, Eric Hendrix starting from last after being involved in a collision with Tommy Nielsen and Staci Evans, Kelsey Curtis's slump and most importantly the collision with Matt Hargrave on Lap 38 which saw his chances of victory over, but as soon Hargrave made a mistake on the penultimate lap which gave the African born-British youngster his second victory of the season (his first ever in the full dry conditions). He now closes in the battle for 3rd place and admits that 2nd is out of reach. He will also talk about hints of his future. He is now at the bar partying with his staff and Tony Dickson sneaks through to have a word with him.
Q: So Wais, congratulations on your Long Beach win, a stunning drive but not a very clean one, tell us your emotions right now.
Wais: Shit mate, that feels amazing that we're back on the top step, I had a poor first lap when Rudolph got me and when I heard that Vini Barker crashed, I was like 'Yes, finally, I can win again.' You really needed the luck to make it happen.
Q: Alright, there was the incident with Matt Hargrave when he tipped you to a spin, did you think your chances of winning would be over?
W: Pretty much, yes. When you're like 7 seconds behind with less than half a distance to go, it won't happen unless you get a miracle that came for God. It was a fun battle at first until he hits me. It's not the first time he's taken me out, he's done that in about 5 occasions this season.
Q: Did he deserve to win?
W: No way definitely, someone has to remind him this isn't NASCAR. If he can't handle clean racing in Openwheel cars then he has to go home. I was lucky to win cause karma served him right. I'm happy with the win but I'm not happy with his driving.
Q: There is speculation is that you might go to the North American Series next year
W: I'm not sure where to go, there is one part that says if I go to the higher American Series, I will make a huge mistake in my career and the other part is like I will fight for the champ next year if I stay.
Q: Can you believe you can put a proper fight to Vini Barker next year?
W: I'm fully confident, I'm training every day, I've almost finished my first stage of it then I'll take a break for a couple of days before I can start again.
Q: Alright, I'll let you enjoy and we'll see you at Laguna Seca.
W: Yep, the fight for 3rd in the champ will be a big one.
It's Curtis, Hendrix and Kuba for the fight.
