McCoy grabs first win of the season
Leonard McCoy had to wait longer than he had in his first 2 seasons to grab his first win of the season, but it came today in his 3rd week of season series racing.
Up to this point, McCoy has failed to live with the big guns in the series, barely hanging onto their coat tails at times but today showed he can beat these guys, albeit with a little bit of luck.
McCoy, ranked 9th at the start of the Formula 3 Asian Series picked up a solid 2nd position on the grid for today's sprint race in Buddh.
The first 3 laps were non-eventful from McCoy's point of view as he didn't come under pressure from behind, but also failed to apply pressure on race leader, Puertas, who looked like he was right on the pace.
The next 5 laps of this 18-lap race were spent behind the safety car as the Swede, Eliasson spun out and crashed.
As soon as the SC left the track McCoy found himself down in 3rd as Kolina's overtaking manoeuvre moved her into 2nd position. McCoy was back in 2nd just 2 laps later with a swift overtaking manoeuvre of his own on lap 11.
On the very next lap McCoy stormed into the lead as a mistake by Puertas left McCoy with almost 7/10's of an advantage with just 6 laps pf the race remaining.
Puertas came storming back on lap 13 and applied huge pressure on McCoy who somehow managed to hold him off. With 5 laps remaining both drivers were giving as good as they got until the SC yet again showed up in the wake of 2 crashes further down the field.
Such an anti-climax when the leading 2 racers were at it hammer and tongs, but McCoy does not mind one bit. The race ended with all the remaining drivers slowly crossing the finishing line behind the SC!
The 35 year old Puertas, a much quicker racer than the 20 year old McCoy will be looking forward to the weekends feature race at Buddh as he gets to renew the battle that promised so much in the sprint race!
For McCoy, the win keeps him in 4th spot in the season series standings and keeps his personal hopes of a podium finish realistic. This weekend will tell a lot about how much McCoy can do this season as he starts the feature in pole position!
Double-Delight For McCoy!
