Porsche: A History of Excellence

This quote gets to the heart of everything that makes Porsche what it is. It covers all the values that characterize our work and our vehicles. His dream of the perfect sports car has always driven us throughout our history. And we get closer to achieving it every day, with every concept, every development and every model. Along the way, we follow a plan, an ideal that unites us all. We refer to it as the Porsche Principle. The underlying principle is to always get the most out of everything. From day one, we have strived to translate performance into speed and success in the most intelligent way possible. It's no longer all about horsepower, but more ideas per horsepower. This principle originates on the race track and is embodied in every single one of our cars. We call it "Intelligent Performance".

Established by Dr. Ing. Ferdinand Porsche in 1931, the company was initially an automotive design consultancy that helped automakers design cars. Most notably, the company designed The Beetle on behalf of its biggest customer, Volkswagen. It wasn’t until 1948, when Ferdinand’s son Ferry Porsche couldn’t find a sports car to his liking, that Porsche began making its own cars.

The success of the 356 and the death of Ferdinand Porsche in 1951 gave Ferry the confidence to follow in his father's footsteps and continue designing cars. One of his most famous designs was the Spyder 550, a car that would prove very successful in races.

By now, the general line of the company seemed evident, as in 1964 another sporty model, the 911, another car with a air-cooled, boxer, rear-mounted engine. This car would take the legacy of the 550 Spyder even further, winning races and rallies. Testimony to the success of the 911 is the fact that it's still in production today, despite being heavily modified.

With excellence in mind Porsche has since become synonymous with luxurious sports cars, cutting edge technology and racing. To date, Porsche cars have won more than 28.000 auto races around the world, including more than 50 class wins at Le Mans, including 18 overall wins.

Despite Ferdinand Porsche having designed Grand Prix cars in the 1920s and 1930s for Mercedes and Auto Union, the Porsche AG never felt at home in open-wheeled single-seater series.

After quarter of a century absence from Formula 1, we are here to change that.

The starting point of our journey is Porsche F901, car full of compromise due to lack of development time and money.

Nevertheless, with two Fins behind the wheel, we aim to lift ourselves off the bottom with it and thereby build a solid foundation for the future.
