Bryan who?

While 18 years old is too soon to tell if a driver will become the next racing legend, a trained eye can certainly spot talent - and in one word, 'talent' is the way to describe rookie Bryan Lockwood. Since obtaining his Formula 3 racing license less than a fortnight ago, Lockwood has exploded into the scene; already earning several notable results.

Grand Prix Express was able to catch up with Bryan after his stunning pole in the season opener of the U-18 Formula World Tour:

Hi Bryan! First of all, a huge congratulations for securing the pole position here in Melbourne. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that I was shocked to see your name at the top of the time sheet. Were you expecting such a strong result?

Well, coming into the weekend I expected to at least hold my own; in the private testing sessions I've done with my team my speed has been promising. However, I knew the level of competition in the FWT would be quite high - in fact, the favorite to win this series is none other than the #1 ranked U-18 driver, Miriam Perez. I think my team and I were expecting to be around mid-pack, you know, maybe fighting for a top 5; nobody expected we'd be starting at the front off the pack.

I have to say, even a top 5 in your debut U-18 race would have been impressive. With so little driving experience, to what do you attribute your pace?

Well, I've been a racing fan for as long as I can remember -Gran Turismo has been my favorite video game since I was five years old. I won't say that's why I'm quick, but it certainly didn't hurt! (laughs) In all seriousness, I have to extend a huge thanks to both my driving coach and my race engineer - I have no doubt that without their help, I'd be in the back half of this field.

Last question, then I'll let you begin a well-deserved celebration. I've noticed that you're participating in a staggering number of series this season, your focus must be spread pretty thinly. What is your approach to succeed in these championships?

Well, obviously, as a rookie I'm trying to get as much experience as I can. That's my team's main goal for this season: to gain as much experience as possible. Championships will come later. Personally, though, I'm a little more focused on this U-18 FWT and the World Heavyweight Championship, a U-19 championship of a similar style. I've had some excellent performances in that championship as well, earning a top 5 finish a couple races ago, but of course the field is much stronger there. I certainly have a lot to learn before I can go head-to-head with the top U-19 drivers.

Thanks for your time, Bryan, and best of luck in the race tomorrow.

Thank you very much!

While Lockwood may have a long way to go to become a top driver, he seems to be on the right path to do so. I, for one, am very excited to follow his career as his driving skills mature. If he builds well on this stunning start to his career, we at Grand Prix Express have no doubt that we will hear his name often in the future.
