Different Reasons
In the past I have made few press releases about the way rating is structured in MRC and how it discourages on track competition and on track rivalries. As I have said before, you are penalized if you want to compete with other driver and you are rewarded if you stay in lower series and dominate there without real competition.
Even before these changes managers had to be very smart when it came to choosing season series. Instead of racing in your favourite series or against your biggest rivals we are forced to jump from series to series looking for the weakest field. As Terry has pointed out, this will become even more important now.
Let take formula 2 for example:
1. 2.700.000 vs 2.700.000 (100%)
2. 2.425.000 vs 2.450.000 (99%)
3. 2.150.000 vs 2.200.000 (98%)
4. 1.875.000 vs 1.950.000 (96%)
5. 1.700.000 vs 1.800.000 (94%)
6. 1.525.000 vs 1.650.000 (92%)
7. 1.350.000 vs 1.500.000 (90%)
8. 1.175.000 vs 1.350.000 (87%)
9. 1.000.000 vs 1.200.000 (83%)
10. 875.000 vs 1.100.000 (80%)
11. 750.000 vs 1.000.000 (75%)
12. 625.000 vs 900.000 (69%)
13. 500.000 vs 800.000 (63%)
14. 375.000 vs 700.000 (54%)
15. 250.000 vs 600.000 (42%)
16. 125.000 vs 500.000 (25%)
As you can see nothing changes if you get every pole and win every race. However, if you were to always finish 16th you would only get only a quarter of want you got two seasons ago. The difference between finishing 16th in 2.00 series vs 1.20 series was also significantly reduced too.
As a result, it is even more beneficial if you race in lower series and dominate there. In the past we had a lot of complaints about older drivers racing in Formula 3. I bet we will see even more of that in the future.
Some might also recall that I have made a suggestion in the past that series should have a basic rating (like they have now) and a rating that would be determined by drivers rating in that series. This rating could raise or lower basic rating up to 10%. I would also give rating to first 3/4 of drivers in series with rating over 1.80 compared to junior series, where I would reduce rating to only 3/5 of the field.
On the other hand, I like that number of seats was reduced. In fact, I would reduce the number of seats even further as long changes to the way rating is structured are also made. At least for me it is more fun if I race against more competitive field than against bots.
Even though I agree with Terry that the latest changes were unnecessary my reasons are completely different. I like the fact it is harder to develop top driver, I also don’t care about lap records as they are just a vanity to me. I also don’t share his opinion on series without pit stops.
What I want is more on track racing against my biggest rivals in season series. For me season series are all that counts.
Changes to season series!
It was brought to my attention last season about that season series lengths on the upper end series was shortened. The reasoning was explained there are less entries now in real series we attempt to simulate. The real effect is less rating now for e...
