Female Racer aiming for the Top
It's a man's world still, the motorsports, yet Meya Malmberg, a rookie driver from the speed loving country of Finland, isn't having any of that.
"It's nothing new, women have been around the race tracks for a long time. I see myself as a racing driver just like I see my competition. I just want to win races and drive the wheels off my car. In the end, it's quite fun!"
Meya, 18, impressed with her fierce driving in the Karting World Championship, and although she was sometimes criticized for being slightly too aggressive, perhaps pushing the limits of fair racing every now and then, she has gained a reputation of being a very quick driver with obvious potential. For her, it seems, the reputation is mostly unimportant.
"Frankly, I don't really care. It seems to me some people feel the need to talk about other drivers performances, when they should be concentrating on their own driving. Of course I'll race hard, everyone does! Do you think the top guys got where they are today by not making those risky moves every now and then? We're all here to win."
The progression she's made proves her point. However, moving to the bigger formulae is sure to put that approach to a test. It comes across very clearly that Meya's attitude is very positive and confident, as it of course should be if one wishes to become successful in motor racing. Bearing that in mind, what kind of success is she expecting from the new series?
"Obviously it will take a while to get used to everything new. New team, new tires, new car, so I don't expect to be winning straight from the beginning. I don't intend to wait for long though. There are a lot of drivers out there and only a limited amount of seats in the top teams, so you have to show what you've got as soon as possible. The way I see it, every race makes me a stronger driver, so however good I am at this moment, I aim to be a lot better a few years from now. I hope this shows, and I know I'll have to make it show on the track!"
It's easy to note, that Meya Malmberg is truly an interesting driver, and a potential future star. Success is never guaranteed though, and she'll have to fight for it with the likes of William Norman, and a great amount of other youngsters. Is she going to be the first female Formula 1 World champion?
"That doesn't interest me. Of course every driver wants to be a Formula One champion one day. But I don't care if I'm the first girl to achieve that or not."
It remains to be seen if she has what it takes, but at this point and time, there would only be few who'd doubt she does.
