F1 Engine Tuning FAQ

F1 Engine Tuning FAQ

Engine Tuning is a new function for F1 teams to adjust their engine performance. Debik has answered a few questions about it which we hope makes it more clear how engine tuning works.

F1 Engine Tuning FAQ

Q: If we do tuning, then change engine parts and tuning parameters and then return back to previous parts and use the same tuning parameters, will we get different tuning results?

Debik: No. Combination of the same 4 engine parts and the same tuning parameters always gives the same result.

Q: How will the exchange of one engine part affect the influence of tuning parameters?

Debik: Combination of tuning parameters required to get maximum engine quality will change little bit by changing one engine part.

Q: Can teams cooperate with tuning?

Debik: Every team has the base values for tuning pregenerated and that value is different for every team and every tuning parameter. These base values are then slightly modified by engine parts. You can consider the tuning parameters which give maximum quality as a base tuning values. Nobody else can help the team to find them. The tuning result is the same for every team if the tuning parameter equally differs from base tuning values so the effect of tuning is the same for everybody and that is fair. Theoretically if two teams know their base values then one team can advise the other to use +5 on the first parameter, -12 on second parameter, +8 on third parameter to get a quality engine with very high maximum speed. But I think other teams would already know thanks to previous tuning which led to finding base values.

Q: What would happen if one team has a base value for the first parameter 25 and other has it at 95? Then the first team can tune the engine with +10 on this parameter but it is out of the range for the second team as it would be 105? Isn't it unfair?

Debik: No, it is not unfair as tuning parameters are infinite loops. 95 + 10 = 105 = 5. So the second team can get the same result using value 5 for this parameter.

Q: Are there any neutral tuning values not to gain anything but not to lose?

Debik: No, every value combination does have an effect and that effect is based on difference to base values mentioned above.
